Short Film: FINAL

It's done!! After weeks of planning and production, Klaus and I have finally exported our short film.  I'm so happy to see my idea come to life in our short film.  Klaus and I were very meticulous with exporting and watched it around 5 times before exporting to catch any mistakes or to color correct any shots that we missed.  This is our final version, and I can't wait for everyone to see it.

Postcard Advertisement: FINAL

After Klaus and I made our website, so I was able to add in the QR code to our postcard advertisement.  Klaus and I also both looked over the back of our postcard and fixed spacing issues that we saw.  I'm super happy with how our postcard advertisement and love how it matches every other aspect of our project.  Here it is.

I love the simplicity of the back and how the font matches our website.  We also chose to include the YouTube Red logo on the front and the back so everyone who gets our postcard advertisement knows where to see it if they are not going to a screening of our short film.

Website: FINAL

Since we worked on our website last, I wanted to mention it first.  Our website was mostly inspired by our postcard advertisement, and even features the same picture that is on the back of the postcard on the front page of the website.

It was also really important that we kept with the same text on all aspects of this project, the short film, the postcard advertisement, and the website.  We also keep with the same colors throughout all three parts.  On our website we include a link to our film, a cast page, a crew page, a page with the summary of our short film, screening times, and reviews with a contact page.  We knew these were all important to include so we included them as separate pages to make the website user friendly.

Website

Now that Klaus and I finished our postcard advertisement and our short film, we knew that the website would be our next step.  For our website, we wanted to stick to our colors (blues and greens), as our short film is filmed in nature so we wanted to keep the theme throughout our entire project.  We also wanted to not only have a gallery for all the pictures that we took, we also wanted to feature certain pictures on our website to help the design and make it more visual.  Klaus and I chose this picture as the first thing you see when going on the website.

We  chose this picture because this is also the picture that we included on the back of our postcard advertisement, and it is a prominent shot in our short film.  All three aspects of this project feature this same picture, giving a sense of unity in our "branding" of our movie.  We also chose to use green as the header of the website, and including the handwriting font that we included in our short film and postcard advertisement.

On our website, we included 7 different pages that we thought would be beneficial for our consumers to be accessible to.  Again, all of the subheadings for each page are using the handwriting font that is used throughout the entire project.  Klaus and I also made sure to include a cast and a crew page with pictures and descriptions of everyone who helped worked on the film.

Distribution

Now that our short film is pretty much done and edited, Klaus and I started to think about how we want to distribute it.  I started to research short films and where they usually go after being premiered at a film festival.  According to The Beat, short films were usually uploaded to YouTube for people to watch for free, but nowadays there a much easier ways to distribute your film.  There are three different ways to distribute your film: transactional (like iTunes), subscription (like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu), and Advertising (like on YouTube).  Subscriptions have become increasingly more popular, with many companies beginning to make their own (like CBS All Access, HBO Go).  YouTube Red was officially announced on October 21, 2015 and has grown increasingly popular.  YouTube itself is describes as "Watch new original series and movies".  Since this subscription service is so new and very accessible (with YouTube offering its customers to try it for free for 1 month) we knew it would be an easy way to distribute our short film.  We also decided on YouTube Red because they are beginning to come out with a lot of series, so we knew a short film being released through YouTube Red would be different for the subscription service.  To follow the conventions of a video being release through YouTube Red, we included the original series intro in our short film.  We think this is the best decision for our short film and how to make it as accessible as possible to different audiences.

Foley Sounds

We recorded all of our audio last Saturday for the walkie talkie, but we recorded it normally.  We planned on editing it in post, and I'm researching how a walkie talkie sounds like with it breaking up.  I went on YouTube and looked up examples but wasn't really able to find anything that I loved.  Instead, I decided to just look up a static sound effect and found this one.  I really liked this one and I knew that I would be able to use it for what I wanted to do.  I then cut up the original audio, creating spaces in-between certain words (like I did in the script that I made).  I didn't love how it came out, so I made the static pauses a little longer between each, staggering the time between each space.  I liked it a lot better, but I didn't think there was enough static so I decided to put the TV static clip underneath the entire sound clip.

When I showed Klaus what I did, he recommended to put the sound of a radio tuning before each time the radio audio comes out.  It took us a little while to find what we were looking for, but I was able to find the perfect sound effect on YouTube.  The audio turned out really well, and I was able to get it to sound like we filmed it with the scenes that we put them in.  Now I just need to color correct the film and then we'll be done.

Editing...

Klaus and I have now switched off of on what we are doing for our short film.  I was given the entire project timeline of our short film and I was given specifics on what to edit.  My job was color correcting, fixing audio, and picking out music for certain scenes.  Klaus edited almost the entire thing, so he told me to pick out dramatic instrumental music.  I found a really good website where I was able to find the exact music that I wanted.  Fesliyan Studios was the perfect website for all of my music requirements.  In total, I got three songs for our short film, two for each flashback, and one for the ending long take scene.  I had a lot of choices for our long take, but the one I ended up going with was called Paranoia which I think is the perfect name for the music.  This is our timeline:

We labeled each scene with a different color pertaining on what scene it was.  Red was flashbacks, blue was present, and green was all of our audio.  I'm super happy with the music that I picked out and I can't wait to start working on our foley sounds tomorrow.

Postcard Advertisement BACK

After finishing up the front of my postcard, I knew I would have some difficulty because I had no idea of how I wanted to go about it.  There were a few photos that I was considering but I didn't know which one I wanted to choose for sure.

When I was starting on the back, Klaus and I decided to go with the bottom picture.  I played around with splitting it, but I did not love it so I scrapped that idea.  I then started to play with the opacity of the picture, hoping to include text all over the picture and this is what it looked like.

Klaus and I both felt like it was missing something, so we thought of the idea of putting everything in the middle with all the text being in black.  We left a blank square on the bottom for when we create the QR code for our website.  This is our final postcard back and I really like how it came out.  I think both the back and the front are cohesive and go very well together.

Postcard Advertisement Pt 2

Now that I have edited pictures to choose from for my postcard advertisement, I wanted to research them a little bit further.  I know that I want our postcard to be attractive and bring in an audience to watch our film.  As I was looking up different postcards, I found two that I really liked these two and wanted to take inspiration from them.

I really liked the inclusion the QR code in the first one and I definitely want to include it in my postcard.  I also want to include the different logos like the bottom one because I really think it gives the postcard the authenticity that I want it to have.  So far, I have made the front of the postcard.  I really love how it came out and was able to find the exact font that I pictured.  The font that I downloaded was from Dafont and I love how scribbled it is.

I think this picture perfectly represents our film.  I included both Klaus' and I's names on the front because from the examples that I found, they made sure to include the directors names on the front.  I'm working on the back of the postcard but having a little bit more of trouble with it.

Postcard Advertisement

Since Klaus and I have finished filming most of our short film, we now want to focus on another part of the project, the postcard advertisement.  Throughout filming on Saturday, I took pictures of us filming to hopefully use for this aspect of the project.  I have chosen Adobe Lightroom as my photo editor because I have previous experience of using it for my AS Level portfolio project from last year.  I have edited 21 photos that I thought were the best that I took from Saturday.  Here they are:

For all of these photos I upped the contrast and brought down the exposure, wanting to enhance the colors of the scenery.  Since this short film is based on the main character being constantly alone in nature, so I wanted to exaggerate the colors in the photos that I took.  I also took both character pictures and behind the scenes pictures, having a choice to use either on my post card, depending on what photos I like the best.  I'm hoping the behind the scenes pictures will help bring in an audience to see our short film.

Cast & Crew

Today is filming day!!  I can't wait to start filming, but before we do that I want to introduce our cast & crew.  Klaus and I are going to be the main directors for our short film (him mostly filming while I take pictures for our website) but we wanted to have another person for extra ideas and extra help.  In our short film we have three actors, only one of them being the main character.  We are super happy with everyone who is helping us with our film and can't to finish filming tonight so we can start editing ASAP.  Here is our cast:

This is our main character Alex (played by Julian Bonilla)

This is the couple (played by Tati Del Carpio and Ricky Kidder)

And this is our extra crew member Dean!

We're super happy that we got some great help to film our short film.  On Wednesday of next week, we'll be filming our last and final scene at school in the TV studio.  We're filming the bulk of our short film today (also in case of any reshoots that we might have to do and whatnot).  Klaus and I made sure to be prepared for today and we're both ready to start turning all of this preparation into our film!

Friday 3/1/19

Today in class we had group meetings, talking with four people in our class about each of our projects and each of their projects.  While discussing my project, we talked about techniques that I could include in my short film to help imply the loneliness that is Klaus and I's main focus throughout our short film.  I also talked about how Klaus and I are filming tomorrow and different things that we're getting done today so that we are prepared for filming tomorrow.  Klaus and I have created two different lists of props and equipment that we need to make sure we are getting for our shoot to be successful tomorrow.  This is what we have:

Klaus and I are super excited to get to work and start filming tomorrow.  After weeks of preparation, I feel really good about all that we are getting done tomorrow especially after talking to other people in my class about our idea (that they loved!).  I can't wait to see how it all turns out.
